11:46 am Damage control for whom it may concern I made the mistake over the past few months of sharing some information with people that I probably shouldn't have. I tried to explain my reasoning behind it. Trying to put into words why you have a deep conviction for feeling the way you do is never easy. It turns out that I was in the wrong place to say what I did. It was taken in the wrong way and I should have expected it. Alas I have little insight into normalcy on the matter as has become painfully obvious. My abnormality seems to be only something worthy of a chuckle. Well, I'm certainly glad I could make people laugh at my own silly expense. Make whatever opinion you wish of me, but if you don't know me, trust me- you don't know me. I've never had bad intentions toward anyone that I admire. It's bad enough to even think that people that I call friends might wish to have nothing to do with me after this goes around. All I can say is that I'm human like everyone else. I have my shortcomings. Believe me that not a day goes by that I wish I could be "normal" or at least what most people would consider normal to be. If this is pertinent to you at all; all that I ask is that before pass judgement on me at least confront me on it on a personal basis. I'm sure you don't know the whole of it if you haven't heard it from the horse's mouth. Mood:  gloomy

10:03 pm Anthrocon report or why Pittsburgh ≠ San Jose I know I said I was going to do this last night, but I never got around to it. This Anthrocon was amazing! I know I had plenty of complaints about AC after I went in 2006 the year it had moved to Pittsburgh, but while I skipped the last two years all of those things I had to nitpick about have taken care of themselves. I'm going to talk more in this con report about the location and atmosphere of the con than I will recall actual events. As I said, I went to AC last in 2006, the first year it was at the DLCC. In four years time, the atmosphere has been transformed. In 2006, the convention center just seemed too big for us. Some of the local business had only just caught on by the last day of the con that it might be desirable to invite us in. This year, we filled the convention space well, we were in the larger hall this year and the dealers' space felt to be just the right size for the number of dealers and attendees. I think the David L Lawrence Convention Cener is a wonderful venue. it's modern, it's scenic... the view of the skyline of Pittsburgh from the front of the exhibit halls is amazing, the windows of the main hall open out over the Allegheny river and it's just awesome. Being the 4th of july there were boaters out over the water and the city of Pittsburgh was having their annual Regatta. It was just the perfect atmosphere to be in for a convention. Not to mention the DLCC is a green LEED certified building that uses 70% natural daylight. That's got to be so awesome for all those artists slaving away in the dealers room to be working in actual daylight. Perfect for coloring and not having to worry about your light source affecting what you see. The other amazing thing is what the immediate area surrounding the convention center has become... All the local food joints are clamoring for our business. They've even gone out of their way to make Anthrocon-related merchandise. That is nothing short of amazing. The restaurants also offer discounts for AC-goers. One food joint even paints pawprints on the sidewalk leading into the building. Fernando's Cafe not only printed up Anthrocon shirts, but they even changed their name in the logo to Furnando's. At Steel City Cafe, all of the waiters and waitresses were wearing their Anthrocon themed shirts. I was just so amazed that the city of Pittsburgh (at least all the area nearest the convention) has in four years become such a welcoming place. I discussed this with Higgins in the Zoo one night. He speculated that FC will likely see the same thing happen after a few years in downtown San Jose. But as I thought about it more, I think I'm going to have to disagree. I don't think San Jose will become as welcoming. I certainly don't think that the food joints will be offering up FC-related merchandise. There is one big reason why I have to disagree, and the same reason why I think AC has gone over so well in Pittsburgh: Mom and Pop shops. One thing unique to the Pittsburgh downtown area that San Jose does not share is that nearly all of the restaurants are independent. They're not corporate or franchised chains. Downtown San Jose is completely different. In San Jose you've got Fresh Choice, Johnny Rockets, Baja Fresh, McDonalds and McCormick & Schmicks. These restaurants are all chains. I don't think they have the discrepancy or budget to do the kind of things that all of the Mom and Pops in Pittsburgh are doing to entice the furries to eat at their establishments. The only place I can really see trying to get in on the merchandising end would be Original Joe's which is one of the only independent eateries in the area. This is why I think the Pittsburgh experience is unique. I'll admit I see the same thing going on in Pittsburgh also happen in San Diego every year for Comic Con, but again, the chains really don't get involved. It's the Mom and Pops that go all out and try to get a piece of the action. But my argument for the chains getting involved for comic con is it's 130,000 people vs. 3000 for a furry convention. I'm definitely planning on going back to AC next year. It was an unbelievably good time. Tho next year I'm going to do something I said I'd never do. I'm going to either get a dealer's table or shoot for an artists alley table. I realized something at this AC... there is a lot of money to be made. and I might as well make some while I'm having a good time. For those of you that read through all of this expecting an actual con report, I apologize. For all of you that actually read through all of this, I love you all for that! Mood: good

My Dad just mentioned that he's gotten two phone calls in the last week, with a live person on the other end: "Hello we've detected that your Windows operating system has encountered a problem" My Dad's answer: "I have a Mac" Other end of the line "click!" AC is going to be my 16th convention, NOT including three Comic Cons.Unfortunately, since I'm doing AC I won't be doing Comic Con this year. 11:11 am Anthrocon considerations I'm kind of still on the fence as to whether to commit to AC this year. I have a room reserved at the Westin and got the time off approved with my boss, but... Two of our AC roomates have bailed, so the room looks like it is going to be exponentially more expensive. The last time I did AC in '06 I did not enjoy it. My job is still as uncertain as ever, and I can only hope I am still employed when July is here, and also, being a contract employee I have no paid time off. I would basically be unpaid for the week of AC. I've been considering taking badge and icon commisions to help with my AC fund, but I'm wondering if it'd really be worth it when I could put the airfare and hotel into other things (like the Mac Mini I have my eyes on). With this economy, I'm just trying to justify it. I'm sure I would have fun there, I regret not doing it last year because everyone I know who went had a blast. I'm just thinking out loud, I guess. 12:19 pm Mispellings and misused grammar I don't know what it is, but some mispellings and misusage of grammar really bug me. Folks, it's not "I seen" it's "I saw that" seen is only used when posing a question to another person or group, ie "Have you guys seen this movie?" Seen is not used in first person. Also, then is not a substitute for than. Than is used for comparison, then is used for declaring an order for events or objects, or for describing a cause and effect. They are not interchangeable. "I'd rather do this than that" and "I'd rather do this then that" have two different meanings. The first means you don't want to do 'that' if you could do 'this.' The latter means that you plan to do both 'this' and 'that' but that 'this' is first on your priority. What set me off? I saw someone use both of those words incorrectly today and also misspell 'glamorous' as 'glamoris' I know some people aren't exactly the best at spelling, but bad grammar has no excuse. 4:16 pm Something I had posted to my twitter a while back so that I would remember it, I'm reposting it here: "Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd have prefered to talk." This was a phrase taped to the front foldover cover of a 1950's metal clipboard/file case that my Grandfather left to my Dad when he passed away. My brother showed it to me while I was visiting a month back. There were other motivational musings taped onto the clipboard in badly yellowed scotch tape, likely older than I am, but this phrase struck me more than any of the others. 11:27 am FC is go I will be going to FC, no ifs ands or buts. Though it looks like I'll be driving up solo. I'll probably be leaving for San Jose a week from today and get into town sometime in the afternoon next Thursday. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of folks and meeting a few new people in person as well. I'll make one of those Con-related etiquette do's and dont's-type posts later tonight, more than likely friends only and include my contact info for folks that want to meet up next weekend. |

7:42 pm FC FC is still up in the air for me. I'm kinda 60% of the way to being absolutely sure that I'm going to be able to make it. I requested the time off and got it appoved, but my finances are in the crimson... I need to get the oil changed in my car before I make the trip and I'm crossing my fingers that my paycheck next week will be a decent one and on time. Here's hoping I will actually be able to make it... if I don't this will be my first FC missed in eight years! |

6:12 pm Disneyland for New Years Eve I'm going to try to get into Disneyland tomorrow night after I get off of work. From what I understand the park fills to capacity pretty quickly on New Years Eve. My pass is a premium so it's not blocked tomorrow. I figure I can get there by 5:00 and test my luck on getting in.
