Comic Con and FC Picnic

I'm going to be at Comic Con this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
I'm also going to try my best to make it to the FC picnic the following weekend. kipper_snax and I are planning to drive up to the East Bay on Friday and camp out this year since last year the picnic was completely out of my budget. Hopefully I can squeeze through this weekend at SDCC with spending as little as possible.

I'm still working on those icon commisions, and I apologize I'm being so darn slow with them, I'm just really REALLY slow at inking (4 hours to ink one icon) Mostly because I'm really anal about how I lay down each line. I'm going to try my best to finish up two of the icons tonight.

gtk2 success in Leopard

After spending all freaking week trying to get gtk2 working in 10.5 on my new penryn Macbook, I can finally say I did it!

Here's what I had to do to get GTK2 working in Leopard:

Installed all of the xcode tools, including every version of gcc and the X11-SDK.

I compiled libtiff from source, compiled libjpeg from source.

compiled fink from source, updated fink to the most recent cvs repositories.

edited my .bash_profile to include "export PATH=/sw/bin:$PATH" and "export DYDLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib"

I then attempted to install the gtk+2 package via fink but it kept stopping while making the gdk libaries with this error:

I tried to fix the missing library with xorg via macports, unfortunately macports does not have xorg support yet:

So my ultimate fix was to create a symbolic link from /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5/usr/X11/lib/libXrandr.2.dylib to /usr/X11/lib/libXrandr.2.0.0.dylib

I again tried to install gtk+2. Finally this time it installed sucessfully.

New Macbook!

Finally got my new 2.4ghz white Macbook to replace my nine-year-old HP laptop. This makes my fifth Mac.

Apparently Leopard no longer comes with Stuffit. :(
and I'm having a hell of a time getting gtk2+ to compile.
Once I work those two little issues out I'll be super happy.
This is also my first MacIntel so I'll be bootcamping WinXP and attempt to do the same with NetBSD on it.

...I need to get me an Apple Computer-related icon.

I got to see Rob Paulsen!

...and I didn't even have to fly to Pittsburgh.

He was even wearing the same orange shirt that he was wearing in most of the videos I've seen from AC.

Rob Paulsen was a big surprise at the "cartoon voices" panel at Comic Con yesterday. His name wasn't on the list of the folks who were supposed to be on that panel. Will Ryan, Wally Wingert, Neil Ross, Joe Alaskey, Chris Edgerly and Kathy Garver were also on the panel. They all did a reading of "War of the Worlds" in cartoon voices.
Also found out a bit of trivia: For those of you that remember one of the first Got Milk commercials circa 1994, Rob Paulsen was the voice of the radio announcer, his line went something like "And now, for the $10,000 question; Who shot Alexander Hamilton in that famous duel?"

Comic Con was a lot of fun, I got to run into c_eagle, colsongrainger, and even Gene Catlow!

Lots and lots of walking though, my legs are killing me!

EDIT: Now with video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re45Ga0yM9A

Short-end-of-the-stickville

It's weeks like these that really test my coping skills. The short of it is I'm no longer working graveyard, I've been moved to days [against my will] and part of the deal is I take an involuntary $1.00/hr pay cut as I lose my shift differential.

I was barely paying my bills as it was, living paycheck to paycheck and I mean to the penny.

The reasoning behind this schedule change: I'm too valuable to be on the graveyard shift because I'm one of the most capable production operators in the store. However, I'm apparently not valuable enough to warrant management to give me a raise to compensate for that missing $160 a month. To top it off, even if they were willing to give me that raise they couldn't... Payroll is already 20% over budget and store-level management doesn't have the authority to give unsolicited raises.

I'm trying to work out this situation, the solution may be transferring to another store that has a third shift position open. But since this puts me in a financial bind, I'm no longer going to be able to make it to the FC picnic in two weekends. I do have three paychecks the month of August which should at least help me still make my bills ontime for at least the next three motnhs.. and at the end of september I'm supposed to be recieving my annual performance-based raise. Though I'm absolutely certain it will be a far cry from $1.00/hr ...last year I got a 20-cent raise.

If I've snapped at you on AIM or if I seem more distant than usual this week, I apologize but my life just got turned topsy turvy.

FAAAAAAARRGGH!!!!!!!!!!

I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE BEEN MORE DISGRUNTLED THAN I AM AT THIS VERY MINUTE!

FUCK FUCK FUCK! FUUUUCK!

Had the shittiest possible day yesterday, and today is shaping up to be no better.

Machines that don't work, coworkers who don't carry their weight, peeople who can't take care of shit that gets passed off to them.

I'm dealing with the same fucking issues I dealt with last night, it never gets any better, I don't get paid enough to deal with this shit, no instead I get my fucking hours cut.

I pass one simple project off to someone and hope it gets taken care of while I'm out for the weekend, I come back and it's got my name on a post-it note on it saying I'm taking care of it. WTF? I passed it off so it'd get taken care of before it's late and by the time I'm beck to take care of it, there's no time to get it taken care of. AAARGH!

To top it off, yesterday I paid for a sandwich at Subway that I didn't fucking eat.
The bitch behind the counter didn't know how to make the fucking sandwich I ordered, and when I pointed it out to her that she was making the wrong sandwich she was all "This is what you said you wanted, what do you want me to do, throw it away? I made what you told me to." No the fuck you didn't! so I paid $8 for a sandwich that I didn't even eat, and then promptly drove myself over to a nearby Quiznos and paid another $8 for a sandwich, I probably should have gone there in the first fucking place. so Subway joins my boycott list alongside McDonalds.

So, I've got this job due at 8:00am that needs to be run on a machine that wasn't working last night, but supposedly was fixed, well it sure the hell aint.
To everyone who hasn't heard much from me over the past month... I'm still around I just have very limited 'net access until I get settled. So far things are going well at the job. It's all pretty much the same thing, just a different location. I'm hopping I'll be able to start my move into the new place in Santa Ana starting next week. I hope Scotty's move is going smoothly. Considering how quickly we up and moved I was kind of worried things were not going to go as smooth as they could.

I'm back and fourth between Yorba Linda, Victorville and Santa Ana for the next week or so, but after I get settled I'd love to get together with some folks down here like Danielle and Chelsea. I owe some folks art trades and I have a commision I really need to get to. I promise I'll get to those just as soon as I have my computer set back up with my tablet. Hopefully that will be very soon.

I hop everyone is doing well, I haven't had a whole lot of time to read LJ, and I'm not going to go back through the whole month's worth of entries to try and catch up, so if I've missed anything important; like Linktiger's birthday, I sincerely apologize.

Here's hoping I'll see a bit more of you all once I get settled in down here!

Oh and btw, all the images linked on my LJ and my mood icons are all dead because my webserver is sitting in a box in my parent's garage. I'll get it back up soon.

No internets

I'm posting this from work, my internet has been down for the past two days because my router crashed, and I'm having the hardest time getting it reinstalled. It's a Pentium 200 box that boots linux off a Compact Flash card, but it appears that the flash card is fried. I've reinstalled Linux onto it about five times and everytime it boots with a LIL-
so it looks like there are bad blocks at the bootloader because Lilo never finishes loading. The whole reason I set the machine up with a CF card was so that I had no moving parts to go out. Ironically, it looks that compact flash doesn't like to be powered on 24/7 for three years. Though I was under the assumption that flash memory mapped out bad blocks internally and salvaged errors like this. The other ironic part is that this comes two weeks before I move.

I'm off tomorrow and will be in San Jose visiting with some folks, I'll stop at Wierd Stuff and pickj up a 4gig hard drive for $5 and install onto that.

For those of you wondering why I'm using a rusty old PC as a router, I have 11 computers in my apartment and a software router is much more customizable than a hardware router, especially for ssh tunneling through to get to machines on my internal network.

After weighing all the pros and cons and stressing like crazy over the past six days, August is officially going to be my last month in the Bay Area. I'll be leaving on the 28th of this month. I'm moving to Orange County, I'm looking into transferring with my job, and it looks like I'm also going to have a place to live. I'm just probably going to either borrow some money or get a lot of use out of my credit cards to make this work.

I really want to spend some time with local folks. I will be at the FC picnic, but I'd love to get together with anyone I can outside of that. My schedule has me off Tuesday-Thursday. but because I work graveyards, I can probably do something in the mornings on the weekends.

Crossroads?

I've got a couple of things on my mind right now stressing me about a bit. Some changes are going down at work that aren't for the better, and I'm constantly worrying about the security of my current situation. Both at work and otherwise. I'm faced with the prospect of making some changes in my life, but I'm not sure what I should do. I could sit here and stagnate, or I could take what appears to be the path of least resistance, maybe upset some people in the process, but ensure my own well being.

I sit down pretty often and think about what the hell I'm doing with my life. I'm not doing jack shit, I'm working a dead end job, and I'm not really having any fun save for the occasional furry convention, or the opportunity to hang out with friends. I have myself convinced that I want to stay in the Bay Area, but why? I sit at home all day on my fucking computer talking to people, the majority of whom don't live in the area. I always say "Oh, well so-and-so is local and I can go hang out with them. I've been using that excuse for the past five years, and you know what? I'd say there are maybe two people who live in the area that I see regularly, and I use the term regularly very loosely. I'm not going to school, I'm not bettering myself in any way by working a shitty-ass retail job. All I know is I don't want to do this for the rest of my life.

Every decision we make has a direct affect of who we will be, or where we will be, or what we will be in the future. Right now I need to figure out if I should make a decision or not. I'm not enjoying my life as it is right now. I don't feel like I'm going anywhere, and I think maybe making a change will do me some good.

...Sorry this all seems so cryptic. I'll talk more about what's going on after I've had more time to think about it.

If it got any hotter, I think I would spontaneously combust...

It's 108 degrees in our apartment, and it's 8:10PM yesterday was actually hotter, so it was probably at least 110. That's _IN_ the apartment. every object in sight is too hot to touch, and ice cubes just feel great to suck on. It's total productivity-sapping heat. I have two LJ icons to get done still and I haven't even started on them because it's too hot to do anything but sit and be miserable. I've taken an ice-cold shower about every 45 minutes. My computer case is hot enough to fry an egg on. according to the temp sensor for the inside case, it's 129 degrees, the cpu temp is at 142 degrees.

I went to Jamba Juice earlier and they had a big sign in the window: We are out of orange juice, lemonade, pineapple juice and passionfruit juice.

I got about three hours of sleep this morning. When I got home from work at 8:00am it was already about 80 degrees, and I could only sleep 'till noon before it got too hot to sleep anymore, laying down on my bed seriously feels like I'm laying in a river of half-cooled volcanic lava. So, I'll be going in to work tonight with about 3 1/2 hours of sleep. It's going to be a fun night for sure, just trying to stay awake. Here's hoping tomorrow will be a cooler day.

In April of 1999, I was a guitarist in a rock band called 'No Gravity,' and we were given the opportunity to open a concert for 'Great White' in Adelanto, CA with a crowd of 2,500 people. This was when 'Great White' was trying to make their late-90's comeback -about a year before they burned down a nightclub in Rhode Island.

This is a _very crappy_ soundclip from our opening show. The sound quality is absolutely awful because it's from a video camera.

The reason why I'm posting this is because this was a point in our show where the band completely fell apart, but we made the most awesome recovery possible. This was a song we had written only two months earlier and it had this really crappy intro lick that we actually ditched when we laid the track down in the studio. The intro lick was supposed to go four repitions in a really weird 5/8 lop sided time signature before the whole band came in, and it just didn't click like it did every time we had rehearsed it.

The dialog after the band falls apart if you can't make it out is "Is this a weird intro? That's the way we play this shit. Stop teasing around, dude. See you all weren't loud enough for the band, make some noise! We'll make it with you. There, see, our band ain't gonna play unless you all make noise, that's the way it is these days, I don't know why..."

No Gravity - Get a Life Live
